Want stickies on top, but paginate together with non-stickies. (2 posts)

How can I have sticky posts on top of the first page, but still *counted* towards the posts_per_page limit, rather than them being shown *in addition* to the number of posts defined with posts_per_page?

Speaking in SQL, how do I fake what would be as simple as "ORDER BY post_sticky DESC" if post_sticky were a column in wp_posts?

Use case: the template has no special room for sticky posts (indicates them with an overlay icon instead), and represents posts as large icon-like elements ("tiles") in a 3x3 grid, so there must be no more than 9 posts per page in any circumstances.

If you know how many sticky posts you want to show on the first page you can use this: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/how-to-build-a-custom-query-in-twenty-eleven
