I’ve had issues in the past where W3TC was too robust for a sites needs, and it often conflicted with other server caching apps like Varnish. That said, the theme I’m using is pretty robust and page loads are on the slower side. So I decided to use it again — recommended by the theme developer.

I have 4 somewhat related error message issues:

    (1) W3TC is not writing to .htaccess. I’ve changed the perms a number of times, even to 777. Still, I’m getting perm errors and W3TC fails to minify and perform other tasks. Then I decided to add the rewrite rules manually above the WP rules, as W3TC gives that option. Nothing. Still no response, only errors.

    (2) The other thing that’s recommended for minify, is to add certain rules to the .htaccess file in wp-content>cache>minify. But the directory is empty. I don’t want to add an .htaccess file for fear I will break something.

    (3) There’s a recommendation in settings to change the perms of wp-content to 755, which I’ve done, but getting no response there.

    (4) Why does W3TC require license validation? I’m not upgrading or using their recommended CDN until I see if this is going to help me. Any way to turn this off son I stop seeing the error message?

  • You could set temporarily set the wp-content to 777 or

    1. You can manually paste the content into the htaccess file which you should do if you can get it to do so automatically.

    2. You can do it manually.

    3. What?

    4. The license is for the pro version not the free version it is not required. ,
