Visual Editor Fails in WP 3.3.1 – Tried all I know, need help

  • One more thread saying the same thing others have said, but it seems some prefer it.

    Problem: title says it. All I get is white text in coded format, visible only when highlighted.

    All these were tried, but none solved it:

    Troubleshooting WordPress 3.3 – Master List

    – Visual editor is not disabled

    – Disabled all plugins, cleared cache (even rebooted computer), still no VE. Started plugins one at a time, but no change to VE.

    – Switched to Twenty Ten and Twenty Eleven themes. No change.

    – Changed the file name of /wp-includes/js/tinymce/langs/wp-langs-en.js to /wp-includes/js/tinymce/langs/en.js (changed it back after it made no difference)

    – Used three Windows 7 systems, one Vista, Firefox, IE9, IE8, and Safari, even had a friend 200 miles away try. Same on all.

    – Checked with host, they confirm they are 100% compatible, and their systems show no conflicts anywhere.

    Thus, I’ve concluded that the Master list recommendations do not help, it’s not a browser/OS/geography/IP issue. It’s not the theme. It’s not the plugins. It is not the host. I have not tried to reinstall 3.3.1 yet, but was saving that till very last resort. It seems to be something in WP 3.3.1, especially considering how many people seem to have this issue.

    Others with the same problem are free to post as well.

    But there are thousands that don’t have the issue . . .

    Have you deleted the wp-includes and wp-admin folders? Then download a fresh copy of wp and upload the folders to the server. DO NOT mess with the wp-content folder. Do not send zipped versions and unzip on the server, send the actual files via ftp.

    Have you tried changing the color of the text in the visual editor when highlighted?

    If I do that with those two folders, what kind of “fixing” of other things will I need to do? Will I need to reinstall my plugins? Will I need to redo my sidebars, etc.? I am going to try it, but I want/need to know what all I’m going to have to do after that. How will it affect the site as a whole?

    So far as changing the color of the text in the visual editor, all of my formatting buttons are GONE from the visual editor. I can highlight to my heart’s content, but changing the color ain’t gonna happen!

    Quick add. Again, here’s a link to the picture of what my visual editor looks like.

    There are no formatting buttons. Aside from typing, there is no way to format things. And any type in there is white. Regardless of how it’s formatted.

    @kmessinger – Like ham1299, I cannot change the font color in the visual editor, because that would preclude the VE is working. It’s not. I have the same blank screen/no buttons as him. The problem isn’t lack of color, the problem is the VE not working.

    Regarding thousands not having the problem: the fact that many have no problems does not mean the problem does not exist. I only made the point that many have the problem with no clear solution, and thus it “seems” to be a WP issue.

    I’ll try the file replacement, but I’m not optimistic.

    @jrothra – Please let us know how it goes. If it works for you, I’ll give it a try, too.

    UPDATE

    I changed the name of wp-admin and wp-includes to wp-admin-ORIG and wp-includes-ORIG (disabling them, but not deleting them). I then downloaded a fresh version of WP 3.3.1, and uploaded the brand new wp-admin and wp-includes folders (not the zip, but the standard folders and all contained files/subfolders).

    Once uploaded, I cleared the cache and history, refreshed, then tried the VE again. It worked, to my complete surprise. This indicates some possible issues:

    – The auto-update failed somewhere
    – The files originally downloaded had errors in them
    – Combination of both

    What this tells me it probably is not:

    – Browser issues
    – Plugin conflicts (at least not for me)
    – Theme conflicts (for my theme)

    I hope this solution works for someone else like it worked for me. Thank you kmessinger for your recommendation. 🙂

    Glad it is working. BTW for others that is one of the normal debugs for anything wrong on the back-end. As long as you don’t mess with the wp-content folder you won’t loose plugins, themes, etc. Often you have to do the step more than once. It seems that ftp gets the hic-ups sometimes.

    This worked for me, too! I tried it after following several other threads that suggested many of the same things, so I’m glad the end fix was simple.

    Thanks to Jrothra – manually uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes via FTP did the trick – I had the exact same problem – I suspect it was the auto update feature that messed up – I don’t think that it could be an FTP error, as I didn’t use FTP originally. Hopefully someone will figure out what the bug is so others don’t have this problem!
