For the past four or five days, my visual editor has been broken. I believe it began with the WordPress update to 4.5.3. One of my authors could not write any posts at all, it would not allow him to see anything that was already written in the post and he could not click on anything in the visual editor except the title. He could not switch to text editor either. After making several attempts to fix this, I deleted a plugin that I thought was the cause of the problem at the time (as deleting it fixed the problem for him). Once I did, however, I found that I had the same problem all of a sudden. I am unable to write anything in the visual editor. I disabled the visual editor for myself and it seems to work, but I would like to have the visual editor back. Is there any solution for this? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

  • It might be another plugin causing the problem. You could try deactivating all plugins, see if that corrects the issue and then reactivate one by one until you locate the plugin causing the issue.

I went through all my plugins one by one trying to find the issue the first time. When I found one that seemed to be the issue, I deleted it. That made it so my author could write, but now I can’t for some reason. I’m not so sure it’s a plugin anymore.

If you aren’t using the default theme, did you try switching to that?

    I did, still no change.

Ok – it sounds like the WordPress update didn’t complete and you may be missing a file(s) for the visual editor. Do you know how to update manually?

    1. Back up site and database.
    2. Delete wp-admin and wp-includes and root files except for wp-config. Don’t delete wp-content
    3. Download WordPress
    4. Upload wp-admin and wp-includes

Took me a while to figure it out (first time WordPress user), but it worked! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. You’ve been a great help.
