Up until 3 days ago I had no issue with comments.

Then, yesterday when a visitor tries to comment they are given the white screen of death. When I’m logged in it works ok, but logged out it doesn’t.

Although I made changes to the site before this occurred, I’ve reversed all the changes and still not making any difference.

    Any ideas? Please?!

  • If you have any recaptcha plugins, deactivate them.

If you are using Akismet that should be enough to keep the spam out.

Thank you – did that and it didn’t work.

When I attempt to submit comment on my smartphone (android) I get an error message saying:

The website encountered an error while retrieving /wp-comments-post.php It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

I have also overwritten the wp-comments-post.php file (re uploaded it, whatever) but that hasn’t helped either 🙁

    Any other ideas?

I just left a comment on the J post and it is awaiting moderation so everything looks normal.

I do suspect that any captcha plugin could have done this as they tend not to play nice with Akismet (and also sort of defeat the purpose of using Akismet)

Thanks Mark – yep, I managed to work it out. I have Google Recaptcha, as recommended by eMember – I unchecked a few boxes in there and voila, it’s working again.

Thanks guys, big help with directing me to possible cause – it narrowed down my troubleshooting time immensely.

Very much appreciated – and Mark, thank you for your comment on the blog post, it’s perfect!
