Virtual Classroom and online education?

Does anyone know how to do an online school sort of website? What we are trying to do is very similar to http://wordpress.org/showcase/solo-practice-university/ but on a different subject. I’m using wordpress mu and buddypress but don’t really know where to start. i am a fairly competent wordpress user and am comfortable with php but not nearly enough to develop my own plugin for this sort of thing. if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!
