In the documentation it says that when entering a Youtube URL for the video slide, it will automatically pull in metadata including the video thumbnail. Out of the three videos I tested with, it looks like none of the thumbnails are appearing in the slider. I just get a black background. Any ideas about what might be going on? Is there a way to add in my own thumbnail image for the videos?

    Hello there,

    I got the same problem!
Can you tell the solution here, so other people can fix it to?!

    Thanks!

No solution yet. Their support has been great in getting back to me very quickly. We’ve gone back and forth looking at different settings, but so far have not been able to determine what the issue is. Because my site is for a client, I cannot grant support access to look around to determine what is going on. One thing to note- it is working on mobile. Is that the case for you?

If you are able to open a ticket at support@slidedeck.com for this same issue and give them access to your site, that would be great. I’d love to figure out what is going on; otherwise I’m going to have to look for a different plugin.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!

    Hi,

In order to automatically pull in the video thumbnails for YouTube Videos, you would need to set the YouTube API Key option available under SlideDeck > Advanced Options Menu.

Once you set the YouTube API key, you would need to update the YouTube videos once again to reflect the changes.

Please follow the below steps in order to update the YouTube Videos links on your slidedeck:
    1. Go to SlideDeck > Manage
    2. Click the slidedeck to edit.
    3. Click to edit the video slide.
    4. Update the YouTube Video URL once again.
    5. That’s it, the thumbnail should appear for the slide.

    Thanks!

I finally found the solution! I don’t know why I didn’t try it ages ago. I’m actually very mad at myself that I didn’t. In the slide settings, under “image scaling” I choose “do not scale images.” This made the thumbnail appear, however it left a large black rectangle in the middle which is the div the play icon is located in. If you have a stylesheet for your site, you can change the css property background-color to transparent for that div and that fixed the problem for me!

I did try including a YouTube API key and updating the video links as suggested above; however it did not work for me. For me it was definitely the scaling and cropping of the thumbnails. Now that I have chosen “do not scale” I found that the API key is necessary.

I hope this may be helpful for you.

    Hi,

Thank you @jennsanchez for sharing your experience.

Regarding having an API key, it is necessary, otherwise SlideDeck won’t be able to fetch the required data from the YouTube.

    Thanks
