• This is among the top 5 WORST plugins I have come across. For starters, the “free” plugin listed here on the WordPress Codex is useless for all practical purposes. To actually use Press Permit, you’re going to need to purchase a license for $55 (cost for 1 site), then continue to pay between $25 to $100 each year thereafter.

For your money, you get the privilege of being treated like a criminal by the developers through their very poorly implemented license activation system. Any little change you make to your site will cause your license to deactivate, and then you’ll need to login to your account and access the developers support forum, open to the public, and HOPE that someone will respond with a resolution. Don’t hold your breath though, it could be a week or more.

The plugin itself is almost as bad as the support. It’s chaotic, overly complex, difficult to use and understand, and it conflicts with many other plugins. It’s also very unstable, and can take down an entire website for seemingly no reason at all.

I deeply regret ever installing this plugin, let alone handing them over $55.00.

There is NO value or benefit to Press Permit, it’s junk-ware that brings only problems and wastes a great deal of time. Save yourself some time and frustration and find another plugin.

I’m not going to respond to this analysis. Just a few factual corrections, though:

    • Pro extensions add a lot more control of editing permissions but the core plugin is not crippled. The feature breakdown on the plugin overview includes screencasts for a number of useful customizations. Code-wise, about 50% is in PP Core, 50% in pro extensions.
    • The price quote above is misleading (single-site purchase, developer renewal rate).
    • The “little change” was to the site URL (twice). Since the support key (for one-click updates into wp-admin) is tied to site URL, if you change that without first deactivating the key, the PP server sees the key as already activated on a different site.
    • Key re-activation following site URL change was the only issue that charitable contacted me about. I responded to the first instance in 16.5 hours, the second in 5.5 hours.

Support has been amazing for us and we have been using PP for the last 1 year.

THe product is as complex as you want it to be. If you want simple vanila access control, use the WP default roles.

If you need a more advanced coupling of roles to permission and the ability to extend upon this, this is the best plugin out there.
