 * Am I right in assuming you need PLUS to be able to fool around with vertical 
   menus?

 * There is a simple wordpress vertical menu widget, but you would have to style
   that yourself.

 * The fully styled Xtreme Vertical menu widget as well as the Extra Menu shortcodes
   allowing to insert them anywhere are a Plus option indeed.

   monitored.
