[Resolved] Version update question

  • I’m working my way through updating (http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress)

    Why is backing up so complicated? There is the 5 minute installation that is easy, but the backup process has taken me more than half hour to follow the instructions.

    1) Seems like someone should have written a plugin to do it automatically – have they? I have blogs on three other sites besides the one I’m working on at present and am tempted to just not bother updating, though I know that can be dangerous.

    2) I used my ftp to put everything on my hard drive, but my next step is to unzip the upgrade so that I can ftp it back to server. Will that overwrite anything critical that I should save in a different location first?

  • 1. There’s a plugin that takes care of the database backup from inside WordPress. You’ll find it included in later WP-releases as well, the file wp-db-backup.php in the plugins folder, so you can just get in from there.

    2. You should always have a full backup, but unless you have changed anything in the original wordpress files nothing should be lost (as an example, if you are using a modified version of the classic or default themes you will have to keep the old theme files).

    Thanks, now all I have to do is figure out how to trigger it. (I’ve activated the plugin)

    Manage -> Backup.
