    Hello,

After updationg from 5.0.11 to 5.0.18 PhotoSwipe version was changed to 5 by default. Is it an intentional behaviour?

I would prefer to keep the version 4 and not change it to 5 automatically, as it is still missing features I use and now they are gone (without me noticing it at first).

    Thanks for the info

Yes, if no version was set manually, the update will automatically change to PhotoSwipe 5 since this is the default for new installations and in the past there was no version selection at all. But you can always go back to version 4 by selecting that and save your settings. Also all settings for version 4 are also still there, you just have to change to that version in the backend settings once to see them again.

Once you have changed the version, it will stay like that.

However keep in mind that version 4 will not get any updates at all – so if you experience any issues with newer browsers (e.g. iPhone 13 etc.), these will not be fixed for version 4, only version 5. At some point in the future version 4 will be removed completely (but I don’t expect this to happen very soon).

Also not all options for version 4 can be provided in version 5 since Photoswipe just does not have these options any longer – for example changing the URL for every image displayed in the lightbox. Also see: https://photoswipe.com – section “Removed features from the core”.

Some things like the sharing menu may return as a plugin in the future but things like swipe animation in desktop mode will never return as they just don’t work any longer in Photoswipe 5.

    Thanks for your reply.

Well, I was a bit suprised that this change came somewhere between 5.0.11 and 5.0.18 and there was no notice about it the changelog. I expected it to happen in version 5.0, becuse the feauture was introduced, but not in a minor version without any notice.

I have no problem check the version in use after every update I do myself, but when clients update their plugin by themselves, they are not aware of such procedure. This is actually how I learned about this – client called me that their lightbox looks different and is somewhat broken.

Could you please tell me what issues are there on iPhone and other newer browsers? Are there any confirmed or is it just a precaution? Also any change “Switch to next/previous picture by mouse wheel” is coming to version 5?

    Thanks

Sorry for the confusion – but at least there was a hint in the changelog, maybe not clear enough:

    5.0.12

    • Using PhotoSwipe 5 with “overlay” caption by default.

About the problems with newer browsers, see here for example:

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/photoswipe-5/

Quote: “It’s jumpy, sometimes repeats images, and 2 finger zooming has issues.”

That is not the only reason why PhotoSwipe 5 was created but one of the issues which got fixed in PhotoSwipe 5. You can also find reports about problems with PhotoSwipe 4 and newer iOS versions on Github, for example:

    https://github.com/dimsemenov/PhotoSwipe/issues/1828

About mousewheel options: no, this option will not be supported for PhotoSwipe 5 since the mousewheel is used by the PhotoSwipe core and I will not modify the core for any options but only add things which can be done with a PhotoSwipe plugin.

I modified PhotoSwipe 4 a lot (including that mousewheel stuff which I added to the PhotoSwipe core itself) – but this also means updates to a newer version of PhotoSwipe itself are quite hard or even impossible. Because of that I don’t want to continue like this with PhotoSwipe 5. That version will be used exactly as it is – and if certain features are not possible any longer with this version, then I can not change that, sorry.

Some of the things which might be added in the future:

    • Sharing menu (this can be done as plugin in PhotoSwipe 5 like fullscreen view and auto hiding captions).
    • Maybe URL navigation and direct linking to images – however so far I did not succeed to get this working reliable and I don’t want to add things which do not work stable.
    • More options and/or filters to control EXIF display with the need to use custom CSS.
