I’ve solved this by downgrading to 3.2.10.

It’s hard to explain exactly what happened, but I’ll try. My slider has two slides. Somehow all of the elements on each slide were stacked on top of each other as if each had cleared cleared the float of the previous, and then everything for the first slide was tucked into the top half of the space for the slider while everything for the second slide was tiny and tucked in the bottom half of the slider.

In trying to solve this, I cleared cache, disabled plugins, change themes temporarily to the stock WP 2017 theme, but nothing worked. Then I downgraded Smart Slider to version 3.2.10 and that worked.

Hopefully this is enough to go on to track down the bug. In the meantime, I’ll hold off upgrading this plugin for now.
