I don’t have a lot of wordpress experience, but I have tried out a lot of free, and several premium, themes. Rife Free is much easier to work with and add your own design touches to than most. And it has a nice, clean look with lots of options. Even with the free version. If there’s a particular tweak you want to make, I recommend using the Yellow Pencil (paid) plugin.
