 * I’m trying to add code to what Google calls my ‘homepage’ to verify both of my
   websites:
 * hhttp://themuddykitchen.com/
 * [http://www.jennifersolow.com/](http://www.jennifersolow.com/)
    which is running
   WordPress 3.3.2
 * I’ve read some of the forum Q&A about where this code can be added but I just
   don’t understand. When I go, as recommended (I think), to the Header, I just
   get an image, not a page with any code on it.
 * I’m an author, not at all experienced with this kind of thing. Can someone help??!!

 * You can find various methods of site verification [here](http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35179).
   It will be easier for you to copy an html file given by Google for each site
   and upload to the root directory of your sites.

 * Thanks – yes, I’ve figured out how to get the verification code from Google but
   I don’t know what a root directory is or where to find it in my dashboard.

 * It is not in your dashboard. You have to login to your hosting account or upload
   using an FTP client like FileZilla.

 * Hmm… I guess I’m just pretty dumb about this sort of thing. I host my author
   blog through Modwest but I think my food blog is simply on WordPress? I don’t
   know what an FTP client is either.
 * Can you explain where to put the verification code to a real beginner?

 * If you can login to your hosting account, you can go to your cPanel or File Manager(
   or whatever your host names it) and find out your root directory.

 * Do you have a way of editing the header file of your theme?

 * Editing the header of my theme just gets me into a page where I can pick the
   color and add a custom header image. I don’t see any “behind the scenes” kind
   of stuff — just boxes to click.

 * In wp-admin if you hover over appearacne you will see editor click that will
   take you to the backend code. There you can add the meta tag from google inbetween
   <head> and </head>

 * Also you might try this plugin [http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/official-google-site-verification-plugin/](http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/official-google-site-verification-plugin/)

 * Thanks Lee.
 * I couldn’t find anything by hovering but I did end up going into Tools and seeing
   a place for a meta tag right there plain as day.
