    Hello there,

I am not sure if this question has been asked before. Please let me know if so!

I am not a server admin, but my job is the wordpress side of our project. Our server admin wants to add varnish to the server and use it with wordpress. As I am not 100% sure how things work, so I have to ask, how “Varnish HTTP Purge” works with various plugins.

We are using Buddypress and BBpress. How well does the plugin work with those, especially when it comes to parts like activities and forum posts?

Also on our side we are having about 7 or 8 custom post types, which work similar to wordpress posts, but with custom fields, which have been created with the “Advanced Custom Fields” plugin.

Thank you for your help in advance! Best regards…

Varnish the plugin works fine. Basically every time someone makes or edits a post (be it a page, post, custom post type, or whatever), it flushes that page content. BBP and BP both use custom post types for forums and activities, so it should be okay.

The one part I’m not sure on is the activity stream.

However you should know that most varnish setups do not cache pages for logged in users, so … That may be problematic.

As for acf, as long as it’s updating the post via the normal WP commands, it’ll be updated.

    Hello Mika Epstein,

thanks a lot for your answer. What you’re saying sounds interesting. I’ll get in touch with our server admin, and I think we’ll start a test on one of our vServers. As we know that 60-65% of our readers are guests, Varnish might help a lot.

I will let you know, which might take a while, how ACF did work with varnish. Maybe it’s interesting for other people too. 🙂

    Thanks again!

I know more people have a problem with memcached and acf than anything else. I can only recommend you make sure you use at least php 5.4 🙂

    Just following up here.

I can confirm that purge does not happen when there is a new reply or a new topic on bbPress. In fact the only thing that does work is purging when a new regular blog post is published (it purges the category page also etc.).

    We’re on Varnish 4.

Okay, I’ll have to do some testing on bbPress it seems.
