Variable products are showing as simple products in backend

I have many variable products, and this morning, I went to update some variations for a product only to find the variations tab (and all the other tabs, like inventory and shipping…) are gone. As though the product was a simple product (though, it still says variable product). I checked another and it turns out all my variable products are the same.

The strange thing is, it just happened overnight. I was working with some variable products yesterday, and they were all fine.

Stranger still, in the front end, I can see all the variations and add them to the cart. Maybe this is a cache thing, though.

The URL I gave is just one example. The images below show the product in the back end with zero stock, the product page minus the usual tabs and the product page in the front end.

Only one thing I can think of may be causing the issue. One plugin (that shows the swatches) is not updating manually. It was due for auto-update today, but I tried to do it now in case. I have contacted the developer for support.

I understand that you’re experiencing an issue with your variable products where the variations tab and other tabs like inventory and shipping have disappeared from the backend, but are still visible on the frontend.

Just to understand the issue better, do you remember making any changes before the issue started, such as updating or installing plugin(s)?

Meanwhile, I’d like to understand your site properly. Please share with us your System Status Report, which you can find via WooCommerce > Status > Get system report > Copy for support.

No. I have made changes recently, but I didn’t make any changes when the problem occurred. I was using variable products in the back end the day before this happened (after I had made a few changes).

I noticed. Not only is the front end displaying fine, but I have had several orders including variable products. They came through as normal.

I just tried adding a new product to test. When I clicked on ‘simple product’ to change it to ‘variable’, all the tabs were back. Click again and they are gone. They seem to toggle on and off as I click. In any case, now I have them on this test product I also have them on the others. Vice versa, when I don’t have them on one product I don’t have them on any.

Thanks for providing more information.

I’m not able to replicate this on my website. It is possible that a plugin is causing this issue.

To test, you’ll first want to change the theme on your site to Storefront, then check to see if the issue is still present. If that resolves the issue, you’ll want to get in touch with your theme’s developer and see if they have an update or fix for you.

If changing the theme doesn’t help, you’ll want to deactivate all plugins except for WooCommerce and take a look. If that fixes the problem, re-enable the other plugins one by one (gradually), checking after each, to see where the issue is coming from.

— Be sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. You can ask your host for backup functionality or you can consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, you will be able to restore it.

— Also, you can consider using a plugin like Health Check & Troubleshooting. This is a plugin developed by the WordPress community and it is helpful to disable plugins without affecting your current site visitors.

— It is important to consider as well a staging functionality in case you would not like to touch your production site (you can ask your host if they offer this service), or you can use WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site.

Hi carolm29,

Thanks for your help. As in my previous post, it’s not so much of a problem.

I’m hesitant to install Health Check & Troubleshooting since there are a lot of 1-star reviews suggesting it broke their site. I might run it on a staging site.
