validation / error messages

I followed the steps provided in the documentation to add some custom fields. That worked partially. It is not actually validating that the user has provided input in my custom fields, and I’m not getting an error message for the missing fields at the top of the page like the “default” error messages for the username and password:

ERROR: Please enter a username.
ERROR: Please type your email address.

How can I add validation and get the error messages to show up when the user does not complete my new custom fields?
