My site has been problem free but didn't validate and I'm now trying to make it do so.
    I wish I hadn't. I can't get the (Gemini) menu to behave.
I have many duplicate error messages along these lines:

document type does not allow element "li" here; missing one of "ul", "ol", "menu", "dir" start-tag
    <li id="archives">Archives:

I've tried fiddling and adding extra

You didn't need to do that - the source is already in the validator ;-).
The suggestion by alphaoide continues what you have already done - make lots of "little" lists in the menu rather than just one. My suggestion is to make it one list - this will make it easier in the long run to maintain.

A task I was once given was to do a Task Analysis (which would be meticulously followed by another person) for the tying of shoelaces. No pictures, just words.
    Im-bloody-possible !!
I could do one for the preparation of an injection, for making a drink, for setting a table, for washing hands, but tying shoelaces ? Nope, couldn't do it.
Even with pictures it's damn hard.
Not that this has anything at all to do with validation - your comment just pinged a memory :)
....or was that a trackback ...

Wow! Only one mistake now, and that is in the technorati script
    which reads:
Line 653, column 98: document type does not allow element "script" here; assuming missing "li" start-tag
    ...p://technorati.com/embed/fqd2xwjw.js"></script>
