When I use these two together my site lags and I think wp retina is trying to keep remaking retina versions while the image optimizer is working to resize the original and so they sort of dont get along and my site hangs

Make the whole process takes too much time. Otherwise, the plugins are compatible and I actually work with the developer of EWWW quite often 🙂

Did you check your PHP error logs?

I get a timeout and according to sitegorund which is where I am hosting

“I have tested the functionality and the issue seem to be caused by the fact that the process of optimizing the images ( that is done by the plugin ) is exceeding the timeout limits on the server due to the size of the images.”

This happens when both plugins are installed. When one is installed it does not happen.

Unfortunately, nothing we can do, both of us. There is a process to upload an image and to re-create the image sizes, my plugin creates the retina, his plugin optimizes them. You can stop the Auto Generate or Auto Optimize and do it at the second step, both of our plugins have those options. Or you can change the settings of PHP on your server to avoid the timeout.
