Using WordPress as a website instead of a blog

Instead of posts, I am writing pages and linking to them with a custom menu. I want to be able to make posts within various categories but I don’t want the the main default page to be posts That is what the menu is for.

How do I assign a certain page as the default instead of my blog? Then the visitor can click on a category from the custom menu.
