• Hi All,

I’ve been looking for a way to use WordPress as a Document manager. Seems to me there should be a simple way to to list files with thumbnails or icons and group them together.

For my purposes, I am creating an online repository of branding assets for many products (PSD, AI, PDF, PPT, TIF, JPG, etc.). So each product will have graphics files and branding guides and perhaps even a few videos.

I would really like to be able to show thumbnails of all files or the file type icon.

I’ve considered using Rumpus instead But I have decided to try and use WP http://www.maxum.com/Rumpus/

I looked around and found a few plugins but I’m not sold on any of them. They all impose a certain work flow I do not like.

I would appreciate some insight and recommendations on a plugin or approach.

    Thanks!

    http://codex.wordpress.org/New_To_WordPress_-_Where_to_Start
Also see some of the sites using WordPress here:

    Home

I am not aware of a specific theme or plugin but there are methods that can make your workflow easier. The first, as Krishna notes, is to get used to and learn all you can about WordPress – it can be very powerful and is used by some really big websites…

One thought I had was to create some custom shortcodes. One for each document type. Associated with each Doc type would be a unique Page Template and CSS. Once set up, the workflow can be quite simplified. Write your post, add a shortcode, assign a page template…

You may find a lot of useful information and ideas in some of the discussions here in the forum. Take a look at these search results, and see if there are any good breadcrumbs that might lead you to information you might find useful:
    site:wordpress.org/support document manager

.. and these results (probably a good deal of duplicate content from the first results) should drop you in right around topic-relevant plugins so that you can get a glimpse of what other folks might be using for document management solutions (from a plugin perspective).

    site:http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ document manage

..just some ideas. Could be a useful jumping off point, anyhow. Good luck!

A caveat on search – these forums are very well represented on Google.

Search WordPress and Your Topic, BUT, then use the Time filters as these forums have been around a long time and often the top results are 4, 5 or 6 years old (and irrelevant)

Yeahhhh… Good point, Gary. Same thing applies to the search here on wordpress.org, I guess. I think it too, is probably powered by Google, so… you know, they’re pretty much the same results. Common sense will need to apply.

    Thanks everyone for your response,

What I was hoping for was a blueprint/recipe to create this site functionality. Seems like with the right combination of plugins there should be a way to do this with otherwise native WordPress.

I have researched and installing a number of plugins the most promising include,

    • SP Client Document & Project Manager,
    • WP-Filebase

    and less promising

    • WP Document Revisions
    • Document Gallery,
    • Document Library,

Most of these did part of the job or just shared other goals.

I will revisit a few of these plugins again to see if I can make one work for me. SP Client Document & Project Manager came close.

    thx.
