• I am going to be starting up a new company which is specializing in wordpress support for non technical users as I have found there is a need for decent wordpress support and backing up etc.

    Does anyone know how I can contact the people at wordpress and ask them if I can use a domain name that includes the actual terms “wordpress” in it. I would prefer to have the permission from wordpress rather than getting a domain, building the business up seo wise, only for them to take it off me for trademark reasons.

    I am bringing this up now because I have noticed today in my own wp dashboard there has been an announcement about wordpress taking additional measures to protect their trademark.

    WordPress Trademark Changes Hands

    My goal with my new business is not to claim I am part of wordpress, its merely so that clients can immediately identify who we are.

    Thank for any help in pointing me in the right direction.

    Kindest Regards
    Craig Edmonds

  • You’re not allowed to use the word “WordPress” in your domain. Just use a different name for your domain, like “Support Press”. “WP” is also an option, I can think of several WordPress related sites that use “WP” along with another word related to their business.

    Personally I think it’s not a good idea to use the name “WordPress” in your domain or in your business name. Aside from confusing customers (after all, you did say your customers will be non-tech savvy so you’ll be forever explaining to them that you’re not officially part of WordPress). Using a more generic name and then just using WordPress in your tagline or description is better, because 1) you don’t need to worry about trademark issues; and 2) you have room to expand your business scope beyond WordPress. Yes, WordPress is strong and vibrant but there’s no telling what the future holds, especially in the realm of open source software!

    Just my 2 cents.

    Hi chellycat,

    Thanks for your input, some good ideas there.

    Would WP not be under trademark though?

    Kindest Regards

    Nope, WP is not considered part of the trademark.

    @craigedmonds Just like you i registered WordPressbd.org & WordPressbd.com
    When i share this plan in support forum.Then moderator james notify me about Copyright violation.

    But they welcome my plan because my plan was spreading the knowledge of wordpress everywhere in my country & providing support with our own language.
