Hello 🙂
If your images are ALL various sizes, they I guess you are always using the “full size” on your website. In that case, there is no choice : you must upload a retina version of the full size which is double the size of this “full size” or more. If is already there, then you would see it in the retina dashboard. If not, you need to drag and drop it.
You need to upload them twice. There is no choice. Retina and normal images are different. The plugin cannot generate a @2x image of your full-size simply because… this is full-size already, that’s not technically possible 😉 The plugin can generate all your smaller media sizes but it seems you don’t need them; those should be disabled in the retina options.
Yes, no choice, two uploads. One in the media library, the second one manually through FTP or using the Retina dashboard.

Cheers for clearing this up, makes perfect sense.
In my scenario, its only the thumbnails on the homepage that a random sizes – there is only one image per project – which isn’t a lot of work
For actual images in the slider, it’s fine that they are all the same height.
Thanks again for your response.
Jordy,
I just purchased the Pro Version and my question relates to the above. I was under the impression that if I had the Pro Version, I would only need to upload one version, the Full-Size Retina image.
So if my standard image is 314x314px for example, I thought I could simply upload the @2x file (628x628px) and your plugin will automatically create the 314x314px standard image by dividing the size in half. Reading the above, it appears to me however that that is not the case. Can you clarify in what case I can simply upload one file and in what case I need to upload two?
I guess I am confused now, that I thought that I could simply upload one file. In what type of case can I simply upload one files vs. 2 files? If so, what can Pro do, that the standard version cannot do?
if the file size was one of the standard WordPress sizes such as the medium 300x300px, would I still need to upload two files?
As you can see I am struggling to understand how to take advantage of your Pro Version. I would appreciate your clarification. If you can give me some examples, I would appreciate it.
At last, is there a tutorial, just for the Pro Version?
Thank you for your support.

Nobody/nothing can guess what will be your standard image size. There is no configuration for that. Every image you upload can also have a different standard image size. Only the re-sized versions (image sizes) have specifications. From there, of course we cannot guess in advance what will be the full-retina version of your image.

The normal version is the most used one, people have standardized all their workflow. Pro version watch on those retina for full-size on top and allow the users to upload them directly in the dashboard. There are also a few more options available (lazy loading).

Actually it was a lot of work to try to make a tutorial that everybody can understand, it took me a few years to make it perfect 😉 Adding another tutorial will just be strange and add confusion. If you really understand how WordPress and images within WordPress work, the plugin is really straightforward and the tutorial I made is actually almost pointless.
Basically all you should know about the plugin is here:

If you don’t understand it, you should ask a friend with development skills to go through everything with you, it’s better to do everything right from the start.
