I am using rename wp-login and also the plugin “Limit Login Attempts” and am having a comprehensive problem: the statistics of limit login attempts still show me loads of IPs who try to log in to my blog – how is this possible, when the login url is “secret”?

It counts the amount of logins through xmlrpc.php. If you want to block logging in through that, then you should disable it.
