Using MySQL Connect

I’m just about to start creating some custom pages for updating details in mysql on my wordpress site.

It appears that the mysql connect command uses plain text to store the password and connect.

I would have thought this was a problem but dont see many alternate suggestions.

Can anyone advise if this the best approach or is there a more secure way to connect through php pages?
