Support » Plugin: W3 Total Cache » Using FSD and MaxCDN

  • I upgraded to the paid version of W3 Total Cache to use FSD (Full Site Delivery). I have it enabled and set up correctly with MaxCDN, but as I’m not seeing any difference I decided to check with W3 Total Cache support for info on how to confirm it is working. After a few days I was advised:

Thank you for using W3 Total Cache Pro.

FSD means the entire website is coming from the CDN, including HTML. We are not sure where complete pages are stored. You should contact MaxCDN support so they can assist you further on this matter.

So I checked with MaxCDN and they immediately responded to tell me:

I apologize but we only serve static files and not the entire site

Does anyone know what exactly FSD is doing? I was led to believe my whole site would be served from a CDN.

FSD, as you mentioned, is Full Site Delivery. It means you set up your DNS records to point to CloudFlare or another service. They proxy the request to your server, which responds with your website. As they cache the response, they can respond to similar requests with the cached version, meaning you get very low server load as your server will not be processing the request anymore. It also means the website is being loaded much faster, because the server does not have to build the page anymore.

In our FAQ we explain what you have to do to make FSD work with MaxCDN:

If you’re still not able to get it working, we can offer you help with the setup if you choose Performance => Support => Plugin configuration.

Also note that DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to work everywhere. You can test if your DNS changes work on your computer with the dig command. It’s explained here: https://www.linux.com/learn/check-your-dns-records-dig

Yes – at $200 (after already paying $100 for the pro plugin). Thanks, but no thanks.

I’m using SSL so after trying to get MaxCDN to work I’m told I need to upload a custom SSL cert at $200 / month.

…. it’s just one sales funnel after another

There are cheaper solutions that do the same, like CloudFlare, which is also a lot easier to set up (doesn’t require any settings in W3 Total Cache). It’s your own choice. And getting a developer to help you out will always cost you money, it doesn’t matter if that’s us or another company. Sometimes you just have to invest once to get it right and potentially earn that money back by the sales increase. That’s plain economics.
