• Where do I have to go to set various options for a widget that I might use on my blog? There isn’t any “edit” link to the right of its title in my list of Available Widgets. If I want a new widget to manage my tags instead of the Tag Cloud, which is apparently the default widget for this function, should I remove it from the Sidebar and place it in the list where its settings will be saved? Can my blog function without this Tag Cloud being active? Answers to these questions will be very helpful as I seek to add some tags to some of my blogs. Thanks for any help that anyone can give me regarding this matter.

  • You have to add a Widget to your sidebar tab to be able to ‘edit’ or manage that widget.
And yes, your blog should work with or without any widgets in your sidebar, so you should be able to add/remove any of the widgets, and your blog will update in real time with the changes.

Thanks so much for your quick response to my questions. I assume from your answers that I will be able to replace the operation of the Tag Cloud by removing it from my sidebar and activating a different widget in the sidebar to handle the tags for my posts. I’ll probably do that. I guess if I encounter any problems from making this change I could always reverse the exchange.

Yes, thats correct. Any of the widgets can be added or removed from the sidebar at any time. Widgets were designed for this kind of flexibility and ease of use.
I forgot to mention, you can ‘edit’ a widget before actually putting in your sidebar by dragging the Widget to the ‘Inactive Widgets’ section. There you can customize the widget then drag it to your Sidebar tab when its ready.

It is good to know that I can edit a Widget before I actually put it in the sidebar, but I assume that I wouldn’t be able to see its work until it was actually activated in the sidebar. Is that right? You have been very helpful with this matter. Thanks a lot.

What do you think of some of the automatic tag widgets or plugins, those that produce tags from the content of one’s posts? I can see where the automatic operation might be beneficial, but I’m not sure about the quality of the resulting tag. The best tag for a particular post may not be expressed in a phrase from that post. Anyway, I would be interested in your opinion about such tools.
