• I’m just a little confused about this because when I search for free to use images it always says I must give the owner credit but when I read other blogs I almost never see any credit given anywhere. Is what these people doing illegal? Or are they finding their pictures by some other means?

  • If you are getting the image from somewhere then you have to follow their licensing requirements. If you don’t you’ll be uisng them illegally. There’s a lot of blogs and other sites out there that get theri images either from royalty-free stock image libraries, get licenses granted so that they can use the particular images, or create the images themselves.

Royalty-free means they paid for it right? Is there any way to find free to use images that don’t need to be credited? I need something to use on my logo and background etc. Or how can I credit such things?

Actually for other images also I am unsure how to credit them, it does not say on the licence how or where on the page to credit them, can I just write their name at the bottom of the page? I don’t want their name in the middle of my texts as it would be distracting from the material, what is the best way to credit the photographers?

Royalty-free means that you don’t have to pay the copyright owner royalties. There are various sites with “free” images – google “free stock images”. Then, you must look at any image you want to use and see what the licensing requirements are – it varies. If there is a credit required, you need to find out from the owner or the site where you are downloading the image from – just what that requirement is for the credit. It depends on the image and the license – you have to find that out – no one here can answer those questions for you.

Actually I am mostly asking about the instances where the author doesn’t specify a manner to attribute. Like on flickr when the image has no information of how to attribute. Does this mean it is up to me if or how to include an attribution?

Any images on Flick are the property of the person that’s uploaded them, and are not considered to be Creative Commons or any other usage license for the general public. They are not images for you to just take and use, even with attibution.

Can you show us an example of a page of images that you think that you can use? That way we can see if they are actually available (here’s a hint: unless they specifically state on the page that the images are free for you to use in any way that you wish and for any porpose that you wish, they are not available for public use).

Sorry, the nature of the query has nothing to do with WordPress, which means I’ll be closing this topic.
