Using categories to create a second database

I thought of a way to have a second database for data I need stored in wordpress. I have my standard blog data but then the second half of my site is a project display of various video projects my friend wants displayed. My though is to use categories to differentiate between blog entries and projects. All I need to do is write a little PHP to look for either blog or project categories. Any thoughts out there?
