users unable to sign up with pmpro integration

I use Paid Memberships Pro with the gourl add on. When new users sign up i get this message

Your payment has been submitted. Your membership will be activated shortly.
Below are details about your membership account. A welcome email has been sent to ******

Account: ******
Membership Level: Pending

If your account is not activated within a few minutes, please contact the site owner.

then I, the admin, have to go in and manually update the users membership status. very frustrating
