Users getting added as Contributors automaticallu

    Users are getting added by themselves as Contributors. I can see they are spam users and I am having to manually delete them now. Currently we have quite a few Authors and some 2 admins to the website.
    Under settings–>Membership —> Membership Anyone can register
    is unchecked.

    But then also users are getting added. What could possibly be the issue ?

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Sorry for this late reply but I have :

    changed the theme and reset the plugins folder with no help.
    I will deactivate the plugins and then activate them one by one to see the problem. many thanks.
