# Users get error message when commenting

 * I have had a few other bloggers tell me that when they try to comment they get
   error messages and are unable to.

 * Have you tried:
 * – deactivating **all** plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works,
   re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
 * – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
 * – [resetting the plugins folder](http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F)
   by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause
   problems.

 * if i deactivate all plugins or switch to a default theme my whole site will be
   messed up….

 * No it won’t. It will just look different for a short period. There is no magic
   bullet in these situations. This is just basic troubleshooting – a process of
   elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible
   by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often)
   temporary steps.
 * Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained
   for future use.
