Users can't create posts/edit profile unless manage_options is active.

    Any ideas here?

My site is set up so that all registered users are Authors. This is a requirement of a theme that I’m using. However, I set up User Role Editor to take away some of the Author’s rights.

I want authors to be able to write new posts. When an author clicks “new post” from the bar, they’re put back to the homepage.

I’ve checked and unchecked every option, and I’ve narrowed my problem down to “manage_options” – if I allow them to manage options, they can do as I’d like… but they also have access to do some damage to my site.

    How can I fix this?

‘Author’ role has not ‘manage_options’ capability by default, but user with ‘Author’ role has access to the new and edit posts options, definitely.
I suspect that you have problem due to some plugin or even theme used, which could modify WordPress behavior somehow. Try the same with ‘twenty-eleven’ WP theme and all plugins deactivated.
