Users aren't being assigned their default role on registration?

Hi,

I have a problem when users are registering on my wordpress site they aren’t being assigned the default role as defined in the settings.

Can anyone advise why this might be? I have tried registering myself and it works fine, but there are a number of users within the list that have ‘no role’ and this causes problems with my WPBB forum….
