Username and Author Template permalink security issue.

I am not a big fan of publicly displaying information used to authenticate a account in public. I am having issues with the permalinks generated for authors displaying the username. I was wondering could the permalinks be changed to the display name or other unique identifier. Either than are remove “username” as part of the login and authenticate with an email address instead.
