Support » Plugin: User Role Editor » User set to Edit only but edits go Live

  • Hi, I’m using Elementor and have their Role Manager set wide open for the Contributor Role. In User Role Editor, I’ve set permissions for the Contributor to edit posts and pages (including posts and pages from other users). Unfortunately, the user’s edits are going live and not into draft form. What am I missing here?

Contributor role is design to leave a new created post in a draft state. Key feature – this role initially does not have publish_posts and edit_published_posts capabilities. Once role get one of these capabilities it stops to be contributor it becomes equal to author or even editor according to the list of granted permissions.

All changes applied to the posts, which published already, go live. Post status is not changed in this case.

    Thanks, Vladimir.

Just so that I am clear, you are saying that if a Contributor edits an existing post or page it will go live regardless of role capabilities? Is there not a way to maintain their edit status and never allow them to publish live?

It’s possible until you did not grant to contributor role ‘publish_posts’ capability. Then user can edit own post in a ‘draft’ state and can change its status to ‘pending’.

After you modified contributor role and added to it ‘edit_published_posts’ capability, user can change post content, but post will stay in a ‘published’ state as it was before editing.
