Support » Fixing WordPress » User Roles not working

  • After troubleshooting for hours….

I am not able to successfully set a user role within my WP site. The role seems to be set on Editor for all those who register using the login form. I am able to see the roles that I set (ie, contributor) within the “Users” tab, but those who are logged in as contributors have access to the page editor as well as editing others posts.

There must be a reason this is happening, but I am tapped out. Any thoughts?

  • Are you using a Form Plugin for User Registration/Login? Does that Plugin have a setting for default role?

Yes, I am using the plugin USP Pro and it does have that setting. I have it set to contributor and the plugin creator told me that this should work. So it seems that its done correctly on the end of the plugin. I also have the default role set to “contributor” in my general settings.

I want my users to be able to edit their own posts or else I would hide the whole admin bar and dashboard since they can contribute posts via a form on one of the pages of the website. At this point, a contributor is able to edit every page on my site and edit others posts.

Unfortunately, this forum does not support your plugin. We either do not have access to it, have not tested it, it’s too obscure to have enough feedback to have common knowledge of any issues related to it’s use with core, and/or other plugins, and/or themes.

There are other methods to do what you want done. If your plugin provider cannot provide support for your issue, you may want to pursue another method.

I am the plugin author and continue to work with @moonmama816 to provide support for this issue, which may or may not be related to the plugin (there are other plugins/themes/etc involved).

This was, in fact, a setting that I mistakingly tweeked within the plug in. Jeff @specialk recognized my mistake and helped me work it out. The website is up and running! Thanks.
