user role disappears on edit user

Everytime we edit an user we have to check the user role again. The checks disappear when editing a user. If we save without noticing this, the user has no role. If you are admin and change your profile, you also loose this status and can’t manage the site anymore. How can I make sure the roles stay “checked”?
