• Given WordPress’ declared focus on users, it is strange that the core team justifies keeping this plugin as an “example plugin” for developers. There are plenty of other options for housing example plugins that don’t make life for users difficult.

Just out of abstract curiosity, how does housing this plugin make life difficult for anyone?

It makes life difficult because you have to go and remove the plugin after installing a new site. As mentioned in many other reviews, it’s not obvious why it is there in the first place and I’ve on more than one occasion have people calling me to say that their site has been compromised because someone installed a plugin without their knowledge.

Disclaimer: it’s fine to leave 1 star reviews as you’ve done and I do not have a problem with that or this review. 😉

I guess the part I’m asking is what harm does a small example plugin? If you don’t remove it then does “Bad Things™” happen?

I’ve on more than one occasion have people calling me to say that their site has been compromised because someone installed a plugin without their knowledge.

Nope, no one has ever been compromised due to this plugin. That simply did not happen.

Now it is possible that Very Bad People compromised your client’s site and used existing files to leave hacks behind. But I hope you responsibly explained that that had nothing at all to do with this plugin.

You misunderstand. I am not saying that the plugin has ever compromised a site – it hasn’t.

What I am saying is that many site admins don’t understand why it is there, or how it got there. The conclusion they jump to is that “I didn’t install this plugin, so how did it get there? My site must have been compromised somehow.”

Which takes me back to the original point: if the plugin is intended as a sample for developers, put it in the developer docs. It does nothing for site admins and confuses a lot of them.
