Support » Plugin: Termly | GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner » Used to be a free, simple, elegant plugin. Not anymore.

  • I installed this plugin across work websites and it proved to be useful. Free (we like that), elegant, simple to use, lightweight.

Now it is owned by Termly, who have MASSIVELY over complicated the plugin, created all sorts of in-depth policy creation, and a paid plan.

I skim read the free vs paid plan table, and continued to set up everything up. Took half a day to complete, involving other members of the team to ensure we had the correct information.

3 days later an email comes telling me the plugin is about to be deactivated because I’ve nearly reached 100 visitors for the month.

Right. I get you want to monetise the plugin. But EVERYONE who used the plugin before you took it over were using a FREE plugin. So it’s safe to say that 100% of your target market wanted a FREE plugin. Offer a monetised version if you want, but make it worthwhile? Don’t cripple the free one to make it utterly pointless?

It is also over the top complex. What should have been a half hour job of updating plugins turned into a half day long mission because of this Termly nonsense – and it turns out it was completely wasted.

Deleted and moved on to find an alternative.

Hello, sorry to hear about your experience.

Unfortunately the previous version of this plugin was no longer compliant with GDPR. Developments in the law require websites to report what tracking mechanisms they serve and for which purposes, and offer the choice of which they want to receive to their site visitors.

While we don’t expect you to continue using Termly, we hope you take this into account with the new service that you choose.
