• Hello,

I’m about to start work on setting up my new website and have a question as to whether I use plugins or themes for the functionality I need.

I’ve identified I need the following functions –
    Events calendar
    Business directory
    Forum
    Classifieds

I’m not sure whether I should select a theme which does one of these well and add in the other functions by using plugins, or as I’ve seen on other sites use different themes for some of the different functions with the home page linking to them. (this is an example of what I mean – http://kuwait-music.com/ the ‘events’ and ‘marketplace’ seem to be separate themes in subdomains.

Are there pros and cons of each method?
Also if there were separate themes, is it possible for users to use the same login for each theme/worpress installation?

    Thanks.

  • Short answer: If you’d want any functionality to be present when switching theme, then that functionality should be a plugin. That said, I don’t recommend a plugin for ‘forum’. I recommend keeping a separate software for forum.

Also if there were separate themes, is it possible for users to use the same login for each theme/worpress installation?

Yes, of course. That’s why we have multisite.
