Use multiple fields to identify duplicate contacts

I am using the API to create Contacts. I see that there is a way to check for duplicates for certain fields. Is their a way to use multiple fields to check for duplicates? For instance, I would like to check the combination of first and last name, as well as email address to find a duplicate. Thanks!
