I am trying to make the default page generated by Word Press for the Portfolio archive be the home page of the site.

Since this page does not show up in the Pages admin settings tab, it does not show up in the drop-down menu in the Reading settings to make it the home page.

I tried setting up a custom Portfolio page using a shortcode, but it displays nothing like the way the default portfolio page looks (the default page looks perfect, I just want the shortcode to display things the same way).

The shortcode page does not crop the thumbnails, and it includes titles which I do not want.

    Either solution works for me:

    (1) Set up the default Portfolio page as the static home page (much preferred)

    (2) Set up a custom page to be used as the home page, use the Portfolio shortcode to make it render exactly like the default Portfolio page

    Thank you.

  • If (big if) your theme offers a portfolio page as a theme page you can try this https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/heres-how-to-make-portfolio-front-page/

If not you will need to dig into the theme pages but I’m thinking your theme has a portfolio page theme page for you to use.

I was kind of wondering why you wanted to do this with the ‘blog’ subdomain. You can link right into that portfolio page from your domain itself if you want to.

Yeah I saw that topic, but sadly this theme seems to not use the Portfolio page template. I can’t do this:

“…assign it the “Portfolio Page Template” from the “Page Attributes” module.”

Page Attributes only offers “Parent Page” and “Order”.

As far as the subdomain thing, I am in the progress of making the blog the main site and migrating to the www eventually. But I want to get this all set up and functioning in-place before the next nightmare of migrating the site 🙂

    Thank you!

Went to the theme site, found this:

    Portfolio Home Page:
Gusto Pro supports a custom portfolio homepage, Single gallery homepage coming soon.

Probably easiest to just cough up the dough for the Pro version.

So to help others: @jnash was correct, you need to have a theme that includes a Portfolio Page Template.

I switched over to the free WordPress “Sketch” theme and it’s working fine.

Well, you could create a portfolio page in the theme but the question is would it look even close to what you want. And you sound right tickled with the portfolio you have.

Sometimes you spend a few bucks and save quite a few headaches.

I figured maybe you were in process of moving completely but I thought I’d hold that deep link to the portfolio page from the main site in case you might want to make use of that.

Yeah my crap coding skills never result in the pages looking like what i want. So custom pages are a bad idea for me 🙂

That theme was nice, but the Sketch theme works too. I mostly wanted those giant thumbnails.

Not sure what you mean by “hold that deep link to the portfolio page from the main site in case you might want to make use of that.”?

    Thanks!!
