URL with "-" (Dash) can be replaced with "."(Dot) and Give no 404

Hi,

After reading a post in Stack Overflow where I try to answer WP questions I can, I found this question:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/32464847/disallow-users-from-replacing-hyphens-with-periods-on-wordpress-sites

And then I tested the same thing on my personal blog

Correct Url:
http://www.mohsinrasool.com/myresume-theme/

And here is when I replace dash with the the dot
http://www.mohsinrasool.com/myresume.theme/

It still takes you to same page, and in the address bar, still keep the “dotted” url , i.e. two URLs now pointing to same page.

Is it normal and expected behavior? If so, what is the reasoning behind it, can you share insights please?

Or is it a bug and can be fixed?
