• Hi,

We had an issue with our site where we started receiving numerous 404 errors. After some research, we noticed that the posts which had the errors had new urls created which used the page title instead of a custom url we had previously created.

We then noticed that all of the posts with this strange error all had an autosave from the same day, roughly around the same time. We double checked in our analytics and this autosave matched up with traffic changes from one url to the other, so it seems that the autosave created the new url…

We have fixed the issue and set up redirects to prevent the 404s, but we would like to know what caused this and why it happened to ensure it doesn’t happen again in the future.

    Any ideas?

    Kind regards,
    Steven

  • I’ve never heard of this happening in wordpress. The theme doesn’t control, edit or in anyway effect autosaves, or the url… The only way I can think of it changing to be title based is if your custom url was removed accidentally while you were editing. I would experiment with one post, open and edit and wait for the autosave, if this happens consistently then you can do a couple test (change browser, deactivate plugins) to see what the cause is.
