Hello. The main language of my website is Greek. I installed TranslatePress a couple of months ago and translated my website to English as well and I’ve realised that there are some issues that need to be resolved ASAP.

When I search with my brand name in Google SERPs, my site is being displayed in English. More specifically, the main listed URL is my homepage in English with Greek sitelinks below.

    – I haven’t enabled Automatic User Language Detection as the option “Redirect Directly” is being depracated which was crucial for me as the content of my english website contains different pricing strategies than the Greek one. I also checked from this thread Translatepress Seo pack, Google find second language | WordPress.org that it causes index problems, so I left it deactivated.

    – I have changed preferred browser language from English to Greek (as suggested in this thread Traslatepress shows only second languages on search result | WordPress.org) but that didnt solve the issue.

    – I’ve checked Google Search Console, filtered all my English pages (URLs contain “/en”) and saw in the “Countries” tab that almost all the clicks that took place in my English pages come from Greece!!!

    – I’ve also checked hrefland tags from this site hreflang Tags Testing Tool | TechnicalSEO.com and it shows that in my english language, the return tag is /el (Greek), not /en. Why???

    – FYI the option “Use a subdirectory for the default language” is set to “No” in my settings. Does that play a significant role?

It’s really weird. As you can see, I ‘ve checked everything.

Please help me resolve this. If solution is not found, I would be forced to get rid of all our translation work that we’ve been doing for months and stop our yearly subscription and look for an alternative.

PS: I visited the advanced settings and saw that the option “Enable the hreflang x-default tag for language” is disabled. Should I change it to Greek? Will that help?

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out and detailing your issue.

Firstly, please make sure that you’ve set Greek as your default language in TranslatePress settings under Settings -> General -> Site Language. This matters because it indicates to search engines which is the primary language of your site. Could you also send me a screenshot with your TP Settings –> General tab?

Secondly, regarding the hreflang tags, TranslatePress should automatically generate the correct hreflang tags for each translated version of your page. If your English pages are showing a return tag of /el (Greek), there seems to be a discrepancy. We would advise to check this again, but if the issue persists, please provide a specific page URL so that we can investigate it further. From what I’ve checked, the hreflang tag is served correctly for  your translated verion.

In case the ‘Use a subdirectory for the default language’ setting is not enabled, it means that your original language (Greek) doesn’t have a language code in URL, while your second language does (English – /en). This setting should not cause the issue you’re facing.

Speaking of Google Search Console, you might want to use it to manually submit your Greek and English sitemaps. You can specify in the Search Console the preferred geographic target of your website as well (in your case, Greece). However, this sitemap is recommeded to be translated — slug translation as well as sitemap translation are supported in our paid versions which you can check on our website: https://translatepress.com/.

Lastly, be aware that changes in website languages and search engine indexing can take some time for Google to process. Depending on the size of your site and how often Google crawls it, some discrepancies might occur temporarily.

    — I visited the advanced settings and saw that the option “Enable the hreflang x-default tag for language” is disabled. Should I change it to Greek? Will that help?
Basically, the users from other countries (different from your site languages) will receive their search results in the selected hreflang x-default tag language.
For example, if you select hreflang x-default tag for GReek language, a user from Serbia (if the Serbian language is not one of your site languages) will receive the Greek results of your site.

Please follow-up on these potential solutions and let us know if the issue persists. We remain at your disposal should you require additional support or further investigation.

    Hello Alex,

    1) Greek is our default language. Here is a screenshot from the general tab.

    2) “If your English pages are showing a return tag of /el (Greek), there seems to be a discrepancy” Here is what I mean with that (screenshot).
I checked it with this tool TechnicalSEO.com.

    3) Actually, I cannot. The International Targeting report is deprecated (google).
    – Regarding sitemap translation, I am a paid user, so I have access on the premium version you’re referring to I have the SEO Pack add-on enabled and I have translated the URLs/Strings for /en pages.
    – Right now I use  Rank Math WordPress SEO Plugin to auto create my sitemaps on Google Search Console and here I can see that has all the pages XML Sitemap (both greek and english). Is that a problem?

So, the issue still persists as I’ve done no further action since the last time I reported the incident. Please check the screenshots provided.

PS: Here is a screenshot of how the homepages looks like in SERPs for the Greek audience (english homepage with greek sitelinks)

    Hi Alex,

Please let me know once you’ve got an update for us. It’s really crucial to solve it ASAP as it damages our business due to the different pricing models we show between those 2 properties.

    Thanks,

    Andreas

    Hi,

    — I checked it with this tool TechnicalSEO.com
Please check the index of your website using https://search.google.com/search-console/welcome Google Search Console.
It will give you a clear report as to whether something is not indexed correctly, not a 3’rd party.
I’m not excluding a conflict with our plugin, just saying you need Google Search Console active to properly identify the issues regarding crawling certain URL.
There is even a URL checker so you can test if there are problems with a particular URL: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9012289?hl=en.
Also, please try using the latest versions of our products.

Moreover, if you are a paid user, you should open a ticket on our website, because the free forum prohibits discussions about pro features.

Hi, i am facing the same issues, did you find a solution? Thank You, William
