Support » Installing WordPress » uploading an old site back up

  • Hi all,

We had our site with WordPress on a business account up to approx. 2 years ago. We changed our inhouse dispatch system at work and the new suppliers offered us a website with hosing and they ran it all for us. We downgraded our plan to a basic as we didnt need it. I wasn’t best pleased that we effectively was handing full control over to the new company and so before we downgraded I made a full back up of our site as a safety net if/when we needed it. As expected jump forward 2 years we have now dropped that dispatch supplier and gone back to our original. I have reinstated our business plan but I cant for the life of me work out how to upload the back up that I have. It is in a zip file currently and quite a big one at 175mb so should have all aspects of the site as I left it.

Can anyone please best advise how to upload this file to get me back up and running. I currently have a down for maintenance page showing.

Thanks in advance for any advice given.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @mountcarsltd

Due to the differences between the various site hosting plans offered at wordpress.com and the self-hosted and self-installed version of WordPress supported here, you should probably ask WordPress.com support instead: https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/

    Hope it helps!

Hi Carlos I did message them and they advised I asked in the forums as they cant offer direct support regarding restorations. So trying my luck here. Just frustrating as I have the backup file. I thought it would be as easy as uploading it and id be back up and running with some minor updates to be done. That does not seem to be the case and its looking increasingly like I will have to do a complete rebuild.

    Appreciate your feedback

    Hi @mountcarsltd !

Oh, sorry for the back and forth.

Did you use a plugin to do it? Or did you take all the WordPress folder files? Do you have the database export?

Hi Carlos I did message them and they advised I asked in the forums as they cant offer direct support regarding restorations.

If you posted in their public forum, can you please provide the link to the forum thread? I suspect something may be “missing in translation”. You made a backup on their platform, and want to restore it to their platform… I don’t see why they can’t help you with this.

In any case, to add to what Carlos asked… how did you take this back? Did you use some plugin (if so, which plugin)? Did you use some internal tool provided by WordPress.com, or did you use the standard WordPress Export feature?

If you used the JetPack backup, here’s WordPress.com’s official support article to restore your backup: https://wordpress.com/support/restore/

@cbravobernal @gappiah I used the live chat facility via my word press admin screen and spoke with support.

Honestly I cant remember what Plugin I used at the time to make the backup as it was 2+ years ago. I think it was through jetpack, but not 100% however I have tried to upload using jetpack and have tried to check Jetpack using the activity log. it only goes back to when I reopened the business subscription (this month) and this back up was made 2+ years ago. So I cant link it to the activity log as it does not go back that far for me.

Once again appreciate the offers of help.
