• I am running WordPress 4.7 with Crawford Theme. I updated my only plugin (askimet) and just reinstalled wordpress.

When I upload images into a post via the Media tool, neither the image nor the thumbnail display anyhing. If I click “edit” I can view the image. But it does not show up on my website or in the wordpress post. When I log in via FTP, the image is in fact uploaded.

I have tried updating CH Mod for the uploads file and sub files (did not fix)
I have tried turning off the auto sort feature (per the below similar post)(did not fix)
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/uploaded-images-not-showing-in-media-library-or-post/
I have logged in to cPanel and disabled Hotlink Protection (does not work)

On the last note, with cPanel hotlink protection disabled, I still cannot access uploaded images (that exist, when doubled checked the ftp upload folder) with their direct link.

I thought I had read about cPanel having an issue with hotlink protection / .htaccess.

Could someone point me in the right direction to fix this issue?

    Thank you

  • Try making a backup of your .htaccess file, and then deleting it. Then in your WP dashboard go to settings / permalinks. Loading this page will create a new .htaccess for you. Then try and browse to an image via its direct link. If you still can’t access the image via direct link you’ll need to check that the uploads have the correct permissions.

Thanks for the tip, however, problem persists.

I have multiple domains hosted in one cPanel. So my in my file tree I have public_html and then multiple sites listed. I deleted the .htaccess in the public_html folder and also in the website folder for the wordpress blog. Then I navigated to permalinks page which recreated the .htaccess.

I checked permissions: wp-content/uploads is 744 and files saved in there (eg. uploads) are 644. Thanks for any further insight.

You can try switching themes briefly to the twentyseventeen theme, to rule out any theme related issue. I doubt that it’s this, but it’s worth checking just to rule out. If you see the images o.k when using the twentyseventeen theme, then you can concentrate on debugging your current theme.

If it’s not theme-related (which is likely), we’re back to some general configuration problem.

Is the site using https ? this can cause problems sometimes.

WHen you go to edit the images you say you can see them. Can you get the url of one of the visible images in the dashboard, and then compare it to the url on the front end of the site, just to make sure that they’re the same. Maybe post the site url here as well, so we can take a look at the front end.
