Support » Fixing WordPress » Uploaded images have wrong permissions (640)

  • I have a client who is wanting to build a WordPress site and they have their current site hosted by Suddenlink. WordPress installed fine and seems to function normally, except when uploading images. The uploaded file gets a file permission of 640, so there is no public read access, which results in a 403 – Forbidden error in the browser when trying to view the image. I can manually chmod the file to 644 and then the image is accessible. I believe this may be an issue with the host after googling around, but is there any way around this should the hosting provider fail to do anything about it?

As a side note, the NextGen Gallery plugin seems to work fine.

  • Try asking your hosts for assistance. There may be a folder ownership problem on your server.

I’ve got the same problem and it seems that WP is taking the file permission wrongly from the folder, the newly created folder should have 755 and not 750 which leads that file is permissioned with 640 instead of 644.

    I haven’t found a solution yet!

The workaround is to set the folder permission first to 755 and then upload the files and create the thumbnails, then the thumbnail permission are set correctly to 644.
