Upload URL outside wp-content possible?

I would like to be able to upload to http://www.mysite/files rather than to http://www.mysite/wp-content/files. So far I haven’t been able to achieve that wit this plugin. Files do get uploaded to /files folder but they can’t be found. I get 404 error every time when trying to open http://www.mysite/wp-content/files/file.pdf.
Store uploads in this folder: files
Full URL path to files: http://www.mysite/filesAm I doing something wrong here?
I have another site which works just fine with above settings.
